If your golden puppy looked like a plush toy at eight weeks and now looks a bit scruffy, don’t worry. It is a normal stage as the soft puppy coat gives way to the adult double coat. Here is the usual pattern, and how to help.

Coat timeline

Every dog is different, and lines vary. Use this as a rough guide.

Age What you’ll see
8 to 12 weeks Soft, fluffy puppy coat with short fur. Feathering hasn’t begun
X
6 to 12 months The “teenage” phase. Puppy fluff sheds in clumps, feathering grows and the coat can look uneven
12 to 24 months Adult coat and feathering come in. The AKC says the full coat and feathering require routine trimming by about two years
Adult Seasonal “blowing” of the undercoat, about twice a year

What’s happening

The soft puppy coat is replaced by the adult coat, which includes the water-repellent guard hairs and dense undercoat. Hormones, growth, season and individual genetics all play a part. Some dogs change gradually, while others seem to shed a lot all at once.

Grooming through the change

  1. Brush regularly. Loose puppy hair mats easily, especially behind the ears and in the feathering. A slicker and comb a few times a week help. See the brush guide.
  2. Be gentle. Skin can be sensitive. Use soft tools and plenty of treats.
  3. Bathe sparingly. A bath can help loosen hair, but too many baths dry the skin. See bathing guide.
  4. Trim neatly. The AKC’s breeders recommend trimming around the ears, feet, underline and tail to cut down on tangles and dirt. Don’t clip the body coat.
  5. Never shave. Shaving can cause patchy regrowth. See shaving.
  6. Start the routine early. The habit you build now saves grooming struggles later.

Shedding tips

Shedding will increase. Brushing more often and vacuuming will help. For tools and routines, read our shedding guide and the undercoat tools guide.

Is it normal or a skin problem?

Normal changes should look like gradual shedding and new hair coming in. See your vet if you see:

  • Bald patches or very thin areas
  • Redness, scabs or sores
  • Constant scratching or licking
  • Strong odor or greasy skin
  • Flaky skin or dandruff
  • Your puppy seems unwell

Skin problems such as allergies, parasites or infections can be mistaken for coat change. See allergies and itchy skin.

Nutrition and coat

A complete and balanced diet supports coat health. Don’t add supplements without asking your vet. See puppy food guide.

What to expect later

The adult coat will blow seasonally. Brush more often during those times. Your golden’s coat may vary in thickness and length across the year.

Frequently asked questions

When do golden retriever puppies lose their puppy coat?

It varies, but many goldens begin losing the soft puppy coat during the adolescent months and have the adult coat and feathering coming in over their first one to two years.

Why does my golden puppy look scruffy?

Many goldens go through an in-between 'teenager' phase as the puppy fluff sheds and the adult coat grows in. It is normal and temporary.

Will my puppy's coat color change?

Coat color can shift a little as the adult coat comes in. Ask your breeder what is typical for your puppy's line, and remember that shades vary widely within the breed.

Should I trim or shave the coat during the change?

No. Brush regularly to remove loose puppy hair and avoid shaving. See our shaving guide.

Is hair loss or patchiness normal?

Some thinning as the coat changes can be normal, but patches, redness, itching or sores aren't. See your vet.
