“How big will my golden get?” is a top question from new owners. This chart gives you typical ranges to see whether your puppy is growing in the usual way, and explains why the scale is only part of the story.
Adult size: the AKC standard
- Males: about 65 to 75 pounds and 23 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder
- Females: about 55 to 65 pounds and 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall at the shoulder
Individual dogs can fall outside these numbers. A healthy weight for your golden depends on their frame and body condition, which your vet can judge. Our overweight guide explains how to check at home.
Typical puppy weight chart
We compiled these ranges from commonly published breed growth charts and the AKC adult standard. They overlap and vary between sources, so treat them as typical, not targets.
| Age | Male (lb) | Female (lb) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks | 10 to 15 | 8 to 13 |
| 3 months | 20 to 26 | 15 to 22 |
| 4 months | 25 to 36 | 20 to 31 |
| 6 months | 35 to 50 | 30 to 43 |
| 9 months | 50 to 60 | 40 to 52 |
| 12 months | 60 to 72 | 50 to 62 |
| 18 to 24 months | 65 to 75 | 55 to 65 |
Why charts can mislead
- Puppies grow in spurts, so week-to-week weights can jump around.
- Lines differ. Some goldens are stockier, some finer-boned, and heights vary.
- Leaner is often healthier. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that overfeeding large-breed puppies can lead to developmental orthopedic problems. Many breeders deliberately keep growth steady and lean, so a puppy at the low end of a chart may be perfectly healthy.
- Charts are averages. A big chunk of healthy puppies fall outside any chart.
The AKC’s golden timeline adds that goldens reach about 80 percent of their growth in the adolescent phase and generally finish by two years. It also stresses they must be “kept trim their entire lives.”
How to check if your puppy is on track
- Weigh regularly. Use a bathroom scale (weigh yourself holding the puppy, then subtract your weight) or ask your vet for free weigh-ins.
- Check ribs. You should feel ribs easily with light pressure, but not see them sharply.
- Look from above. You should see a waist behind the ribs.
- Look from the side. The belly should tuck up toward the back legs.
- Track it. Our free puppy checklist has a weight log.
Veterinary schools use a 9-point body condition score, aiming for about 4 to 5 out of 9. Your vet can show you what that looks like.
Height
Puppies often reach most of their adult height by about 8 to 12 months, but the chest deepens and muscles fill out after that. That is why many goldens look gangly at 8 to 10 months.
Feeding for healthy growth
Large-breed puppies should be fed a diet formulated for growth including large-size dogs, in measured portions. Don’t free-feed. Our feeding guide and puppy food guide explain more.
When to ask the vet
- Your puppy is gaining weight much faster than the chart, or ribs are hard to feel
- Your puppy is noticeably thin or not gaining
- Your puppy limps, bunny-hops or has trouble getting up (possible joint issue, see hip dysplasia)
- You are unsure whether your puppy is a healthy weight

Frequently asked questions
How big do golden retrievers get?
According to the AKC, adult females typically weigh 55 to 65 pounds and males 65 to 75 pounds. The AKC breed standard gives height at the withers of about 23 to 24 inches for males and 21.5 to 22.5 inches for females.
How much should a golden retriever puppy weigh at 3 months?
Most published charts show roughly 15 to 26 pounds at three months, with males toward the higher end. That is a typical range, not a target. Your vet will judge your puppy by body condition as well as the scale.
When do golden retrievers stop growing?
Most reach adult height by around a year and continue to fill out until about two years. Males can take longer to finish maturing.
Is my puppy too small or too big?
Look at body condition, not just the number. You should easily feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above. If your puppy is far outside the usual range, or gaining very fast, ask your vet.
Do English cream goldens weigh differently?
Lines differ somewhat in build, but the same healthy weight rules apply: lean, with visible waist and easily felt ribs. See our English cream guide.
